Analysis of the situation
The purpose of this research is to assess the needs of the population and the satisfaction with the quality of socially important issues coverage in the media, as well as the opportunities of the media representatives and their and attitudes to the relevant problems.
Regions participating in the research: Tomsk, Khanty-Mansiysk, Barnaul, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov, Kazan, Krasnoyarsk, Makhachkala, Lipetsk, Syktyvkar.
Selection of regions was based on the following criteria: location - the cities of Central Russia, Siberia, the Urals and Southern Federal District; also, the following conditions were taken into account: - a city with a population of over 100,000 people, the presence of large media holdings in the region, the presence of a respected and old-established NGO as a project partner.
To examine the situation in the project regions, a qualitative research was carried out in February-March, 2009, by method of semi-formalized personal interviews with the media experts, 4 focus groups among the general population were organized to assess the needs and level of social issues coverage in the regional media, and the quantitative research of the general population was carried out by method of personal interviews, using a structured questionnaire.
Basing on the results of the research, an analytical report was written.
