Summer School

A targeted training to regional journalists on producing professional and ethically balanced materials on critical social topics while emphasizing multimedia approaches and network building to improve market competitiveness has been developed within the project activities.

Summer School was launched on July 9, 2010 at the Higher School of Journalism. 75 journalists from all regions of Russia, including Siberia and the Volga Federal District, as well as the North Caucasus, participated in it.

The Summer School was attended mainly by representatives of private media, but there were some public media, mostly representing republics of Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Komi. Having come from different parts of the country, the journalists were learning virtually around the clock on the basis of the Higher School of Journalism. The Summer School program was designed to take into account the balance between the theoretical part and practical part of skills development and included three key thematic components:
1. Theory and practice of multimedia journalism;
2. Organization of work in a convergent newsroom;
3. Basic principles of project management.

Summer School Topics:
• Modern trends in media development
• Multimedia production. Hypertext and multimedia as a basis of a contemporary news story. Multimedia script
• Specific features of the audiovisual language. Features of perception of audiovisual information. Language of different media-platforms
• Basics of video and video editing. Editing phase, plot, subject
• Basics of news photos • How to make a social information attractive using multimedia
• Organizing a multimedia newsroom.

At the Summer School, particular attention was paid to social issues: health, education, inter-ethnic relations, civic activity, charity, culture of local communities, which were discussed at specially organized evening sessions. The participants passed a test, the results of which allowed them to determine their level of knowledge in the field of HIV / AIDS and to update the topic. Journalists noted that they still did not know how to write on this subject and had very little information.
